James Madison Graduate Fellowship


General Description: A fellowship program to improve teaching about the U.S. constitution in secondary schools. Supports study for master’s degrees in education, political science, American history, and American government.

Disciplines Supported: Secondary school education, American history, American government, political science, social sciences.

Award: Fellowship payments cover the costs of tuition, fees, books, and room and board but cannot exceed $12,000 per academic year. Fellows have two years to complete their degree, so the maximum award is $24,000.

Minimum Qualifications: The applicant must:

  • Be a U.S. citizen or U.S. national.
  • Plan to become a teacher of American history, American government, or social studies at the secondary school level.
  • Receive a bachelor’s degree by August 31 of the year in which he or she is applying. Current teachers are also eligible; see the James Madison Web site below for more information.

Deadlines: Completed applications must be received no later than March 1 of each year.
